The existence of God in the modern day world has become a hotly contested debate. While it is true that no one can offer any objective evidence of ever seeing God, it is also not the first time that people have demanded to see God or have doubt in the existence of God. In fact, both the Bible and the Quran tell us that despite the numerous Signs shown by God to the Israelites during the time of Moses, they still demanded to see God in person in order to believe in His existence.
The fact that you cannot observe something with our limited senses of touch, taste, hear, smell and sight does not rule out its existence altogether. For instance, radio waves and radiation exist in a different spectrum or dimension, which are not comprehensible to any of our sensory systems. Do we deny the existence of radio waves and radiation just because we can’t see them? Quite the contrary, we decode the signals of radio waves for telecommunication purposes and employ radiation for use in agriculture and medicine.
Not withstanding the above illustration, some scientific discoveries do not require empirical observation to be trusted as fact. That is, you only need to observe the effect of the subject matter under investigation in order to prove it as fact. For example, you observe the effect of gravitational force when an object falls from the sky and also feel the lack thereof when in space. You do not deny the existence of the force of gravity for the obvious reason that it is not perceptible but rightfully acknowledge its existence based on observation. In another classical example, astronomers and astrophysicists believe in the existence of dark matter in the universe yet it cannot be seen or detected. They base this belief on the gravitational lensing of light in the galaxies exerted upon by the dark matter. Again observation of the effect is enough to point towards its existence.
If we accept the fact that the effect of certain phenomenon in nature can be used to explain the existence of something like gravitational force or dark matter, then why is it so hard to believe in the existence of God just because we cannot see Him with our limited senses?
If the cited natural phenomenon exists in a different dimension or spectrum beyond the reach of human perception, it should be understood that the Creator of the universe also exists in a different dimension or spectrum and becomes visible to our limited senses via His creations and the laws of nature.
Interestingly, the Holy Quran beautifully explain this point by declaring that “Eyes cannot reach Him but He reaches the eyes. And He is the Incomprehensible, the All-Aware” (6:104). The Quran goes on to explain the reason why we cannot see God in the universe despite our intellectual and technological advancement. It states, “He is the originator of the heavens and earth. He has made for you pairs of your own selves and of the cattle also He has made pairs. He multiplies you there in. There is nothing whatever like unto Him; and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” (42:12). This verse shows that God is the originator of the universe and He has created things like plants and animals in pairs however none of His created objects in the entire universe look like Him. He is far above human perception and comprehension. This also proves that there is no point testing the existence of God in the laboratory because God’s physical existence is beyond the spectrum or dimension of human understanding.
Now the question one may ask, if God exists and is beyond our reach how then does He interact with us on a daily basis? Once again the Noble Quran provides us with a convincing proof that God interacts with our souls everyday. It says, “Allah takes away the souls of human beings at the time of death; and during their sleep of those that are not yet dead. And then He retains those against which He has decreed death, and sends back the others till an appointed term. In that surely are Signs for a people who reflect” (39:43). This verse makes it clear that our physical body cannot interact with God but our soul, which exists in a different dimension or spectrum just like God, interacts with Him on a daily basis.
That is according to the Noble Quran, our limited physical body may deny the existence of God but our soul that is not perceptible to us does not deny God’s existence. It therefore makes complete sense that God Almighty speaks to our souls in the form of true dreams, visions and revelations of future events. True dreams are vouchsafed to almost everyone irrespective of anyone’s spiritual status or behavior and both the Bible and the Quran support this view. This point should therefore quash the idea that God used to speak in the past but for some reason, He has stopped speaking in our time. He still speaks to our souls except that we have not taken notice of it.
In conclusion, depending on the spectrum or dimension, you cannot absolutely deny the existence of things. Objects such as atoms and molecule exist in a different dimension beyond the reach of the human eye and require the use of specialized equipment to visualize them in the laboratory. In the same way, the creator of the universe, God, exists in a different spectrum or dimension beyond the reach of human inventions or discoveries but visible to human understanding via His creation, which science and technology has confirmed and will continue to do so in the future.
